While I was fixing a sticky flush handle which was holding the flapper open, my toilet seat decided that would be an excellent time to self destruct. No big deal I thought. The seat was one of those potty training seats with the tiny seat within the lid. The girls are both long since potty trained, so I’ll quickly swap the original seat back on.

Well, not so fast. The potty training seat had metal hardware, which had rusted together in the 6ish years it has been installed. I've never in my life had a freaking toilet seat fight me so hard. In the end though, I was victorious.

One rare instance where the new stuff being made  out of plastic instead of good old metal is an improvement

This gross leaky metal is getting replaced with plastic. Still getting the old out but have a little of the new dry-fitted

Toilet seats are expensive. They say they come with brass bits, but it’s a lie.

Thankfully I had the original toilet seat in the basement, ready to be reinstalled. This morning's adventure: no hot water, and the pilot light won't stay lit.

My understanding is that these days, water heaters are manufactured with the entire flame/pilot area all sealed up and not serviceable and you have to buy a new water heater. For your sake, I hope I am not correct about this...

There are four torx screws “ sealing”  the area off, and the manual says to “Have a trained technician replace the thermocouple.” I have consulted with my plumber friend, to make sure it was doable and I wasn’t going to endanger my family. Unfortunately he lives 3-1/2 hours away, or he’d just fix it for a beer.

...fix it for a beer...

I have a mechanic friend who owns a shop and he smogs my cars for me and I buy him steak and eggs for brekkie.

I’ll tackle most things, but gas and plumbing make me nervous.

It really wasn't that bad. All fixed now.

So did you replace the thermocouple?
